It was influenced by European clothing and styles popular in the 17th century, and after evolved into as a new *street fashion in Japan.

This style became popular overseas as well as in Japan after a Japanese actress Kyoko Fukada wore Lolita dress in “Kamikaze Girls”, a movie premiered in 2004.

Although becoming less trendy in Japan these days, the fashion is still in vogue overseas.
