Do you know Japanese traditional calendar?
“Kannazuki” is the traditional name for October in Japan.
The name is translated literally as “the month when the gods are absent”.
It is said that eight million gods of Japan (called “Yaoyorozunokamigami”) left their shrines and gathered every October at Izumo Taisha, one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
October is called “Kannazuki ”as there are no gods outside Izumo province in this period, whereas only in Izumo province, the month is called “Kamiarizuki”, which means “the month when the gods are present”.
This is an interesting word origin, isn’t it?
