November 17th is Shogi (将棋)Day.
Do you know that there are many Japanese words derived from Shogi?
I will take up several of them.
Ōte(王手)
Meaning in Shogi:
Check(The usual way of Shogi games to end is for one side to checkmate other side’s king.)
➡Very close to victory
例)強敵との試合に勝ち、優勝に王手をかけた。
Ex) He defeated a formidable opponent in the match, and he will the victory within one game.
Tsumi/ Tsunda(詰み/詰んだ)
Meaning in Shogi:To be checkmated
➡Screwed up, stuck
例)明日までの課題に全く手をつけていない。詰んだ。
※最近の若者の間でよく使われる使い方です。
Ex) I have not started doing my homework that must be submitted by tomorrow. I screwed up.
