Leaf peeping

Culture & Seasons

Do you know why we call viewing autumn leaves “Momijigari(紅葉狩り)?

(狩りmeans “hunting”)

There are some opinions about the reason.

One is that visiting a mountain to see autumn leaves was considered as hunting by the nobles in the Heian period (794-1185). The other is that people used to break off the autumn tree branches to watch and touch them. This is off course what we must not do!!

Why don’t you search autumn leaf spots in Tokyo?
